Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course

MSBR 8 week Meditation Course led by Jon Medders

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was initially developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, a medical professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in 1979. MBSR has evolved into a highly refined systematic approach to helping a person acquire a deep and life-long set of mindfulness practices. Once learned and applied, these practices can help the committed learner to discover a sense of deepened ease and clarity of mind, more emotional stability in the face of challenges, and, most importantly, increased enjoyment of life.

MBSR has been shown to benefit individuals facing life stress, medical conditions, and psychological distress.  MBSR is also helpful in prevention and wellness for those interested in becoming expert in taking care of oneself and maintaining a sense of balance.

The program includes:
•     guided mindfulness meditation instruction and practice
•    gentle stretching, including mindful yoga and tai chi
•    group dialogue with emphasis on mindful listening and speaking
•    individually tailored instruction
•    daily home assignments, with home practice materials provided
•    use of concepts and terms based on up to date research on the phenomenon of stress and principals of positive psychology.

Jon Medders, MAT, LMSW, is an experienced MBSR and general mindfulness teacher. Jon's 8-week program is closely modeled on the most current Stress Reduction Program at UMMS, through which Jon has engaged in intensive MBSR teacher training under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli.
